The Tim Horton's North Okanagan Athlete, Team and Leadership Awards were presented this week. I've been on the committee for years and it is never an easy decision. We have so many dedicated athletes, coaches and organizers.
Speedskater, 13 year old Connie Kapak most recently won five gold medals at the Canada West finals and was presented with the Athlete of the Year.
Jim Cotter's Vernon-Kelowna curling rink was named Team of the Year after their second straight BC men's title, representing BC at the Brier, along with 3rd Kevin Folk, 2nd Ty Griffith and lead Rick Sawatsky. Jim is also well know for his work with the junior curling program in Vernon.
The Leadership award went to Mel Briggeman. Again a difficult decision, but well deserving. Everyone who's ever played basketball knows Mel and his love of the game. He's a former coach and official. He was involved in the Funtastic society, and many other sports as well as summer and winter games. He's also received numerous other awards for his dedication to sports. I've known him for years and had no idea about some of the ways he's made a difference. Mel thanks for everything you've done and continue to do!
Congrats to all the nominees and the parents and coaches who took the time to nominate all these deserving athletes.
Have a great day!
