Coyote Caused Serious Crash

A Salmon Arm teen is in Kelowna General Hospital with serious injuries after an accident Friday night caused by a coyote. Armstrong RCMP say about 5:30 Friday night a 2004 Pontiac Grandam headed northbound on Hwy 97 nearing Rosedale Avenue in Armstrong collided with a coyote, veered across the Highway and was T-boned by a  2005 Chevrolet Equinox. The 16-year-old girl driving and her father, both from Salmon Arm, were taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital after being extracted by fire-rescue. Owners Scares Off Knife Weilding Robber

The owner of a small Vernon grocery store wasn't about to hand over his hard earned cash to a thief. Vernon RCMP spokesperson, Gord Molendyk says about 7:15 Saturday night a man with a knife tried to hold up the owner of the Village Market on hospital hill.  He says the owner refused to hand over any cash and started throwing stuff from the counter at the robber. Polson Park Explosion

Vernon RCMP are looking for suspects after two fires in the same area on the weekend. Police spokesperson, Gord Molendyk says about 6:40pm Saturday witnesses heard a large explosion and saw three people running from the playground area in Polson Park.  He says someone set an aerosol can on fire, causing an explosion that damaged the playground equipment. Molendyk says it left a large hole in the slide.  The police dog tracked the scent to the parking lot in the Polson Mall. Site for Okanagan Correctional Centre Official

The Province has selected the Osoyoos Indian Band'sproposed site, in the Senkulmen Enterprise Park on Highway 97, asthe preferred location for a new Okanagan correctional centre,Premier Christy Clark announced today. "This project has the potential to bring incredible economicbenefits to the South Okanagan and greater public safety forcommunities, correctional staff and inmates across our province,"said Premier Clark. Prison Going South?

It looks like Lumby won't be the home of the new prison. It looks like Oliver will be the site for a new provincial jail in the Okanagan. Premier Christie Clark is holding a news conference along with the chief of the Osoyoos Indian band this morning, and speculation is that a new prison will be built on Osoyoos Indian Band land just north of Oliver. Lumby, Summerland, the Osoyoos and Penticton Indian Bands all bid on the 360 cell jail. Its a project that's caused a considerable amount of controversy in those communities. Ashton Trial Delay

A trial against a former Vernon teacher, accused of having a sexual relationship with a student has been delayed a month. Crown Counsel, Neil Flanagan, says the trial is now scheduled for two weeks, beginning March 5th.  Ashton is facing charges alleging a sexual relationship with a male student under the age of 14.    Last summer she selected trial by judge alone after her earlier trial ended in a hung jury. Ashton is facing two perjury charges, but those are being dealt with separately.     Read More...
